VIDEO: Dave Mancini
DETROIT LIVES!
Thursday, December 06, 2012
Dave Mancini, owner of
Supino Pizzeria
(one of Detroit's most popular and most nationally-recognized eateries), remembers the days when he was first starting out in his little Eastern Market pizza parlor when Jerry Belanger, owner of
the Park Bar
, would come in and order a dozen pizzas ... just to give them away in his bar. By doing this, Belanger helped Mancini build his loyal customer base, and he has never forgotten that. "Competition is not a problem right now," he says, and he makes those same efforts to help others just getting their start. Video by

VIDEO: John George
DETROIT LIVES!
Friday, October 26, 2012
John George, founder of
Motor City Blight Busters
, says enough with all the talking: "Get off your ass and do something." Which is exactly how Blight Busters came to be. Tired of a house in his neighborhood being used as a crack house, he took it upon himself to board it up. Since then the nonprofit has boarded up, secured, demolished, rebuilt, repainted or otherwise positively impacted some 1,500 houses in the city with 120,000 volunteers logging almost 700,000 hours. You want change? Do it yourself. Video by
